Ok Sony seems to have revised thier manual since the last time I looked at it. Before it mentioned that the playback over optical would only be in stereo, but now they've added more detail.

Quote:
From Manual rev2.50: When audio from Super Audio CDs is output from the system's digital out (optical) connector, simple playback (playback at 44.1 kHz using 16 bits) occurs.

So I guess thats that. Perhaps the FAQ here should be revised here as well.

That's really odd -- what's the point of allowing SACD output via optical if it doesn't get any better than 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo i.e. RBCD quality?

Right, well are'nt there a few SACDs that are only DSD with no redbook layer? I guess it could come in handy then. But Why don't they allow the audio to at least be upscaled like a normal audio CD?

Oh you're right about that. I complete forgot, even though I've got four single-layer discs myself. Of one of them I've also got the RBCD.

I completely agree with you. The least they should allow is upsampling (in fact downsampling) to the same nice frequencies as RBCD: 88.2 or 176.4 kHz. The odd thing here is that my Red Book copy of Friday Night in San Francisco may perform better via optical than my SACD copy. I think that's weird.
