Today I got my copy of Leben, a hybrid SACD by German synth-pop group Schiller. As far as I can tell, this group is only known in their home country. At least I for one have never seen their records anywhere else than when traveling to Germany.
I'm happy, if only because this is one of so precious few SACD titles in this genre, my favourite. If I have to summarize it I'd describe it as Enigma-like, with a hint of William Orbit and Propaganda's second album, 1234.
Some striking things: - The stereo and multichannel 'layers' have different track listings, though the differences are minor: the stereo versions of tracks 8 and 10 are listed as Fernsehfassung -- television version. Perhaps they felt they couldn't make a proper 5.1 mix with the stereo (or mono) source material?
- The disc sports a Dolby Surround logo. I assume this applies to the CD layer, although the stereo DSD layer could be encoded with this as well (I just wouldn't see the point it).
- There's also a Copy Control logo. For sure this applies to the CD layer, but it's the first hybrid SACD like this I've come across. I have not checked yet whether my PC DVD-ROM drive will let me rip the Red Book audio.
