Three interesting updates to our original post about the $289.99 Oppo BDP-80 Blu-ray Disc/DVD-Video/DVD-Audio/SACD player:
  • It does deliver both DSD and PCM (of course just not simultaneously) on HDMI with SACD playback. The difference with the BDP-83 is that on the latter, analog output is converted directly from DSD while on the new model the signal first gets converted from DSD to "high-resolution" PCM, then from digital to analog. Oppo has confirmed to us this PCM is 24-bit 88.2 kHz.
  • The player can now be purchased from Amazon.com here.
  • The user manual can now be downloaded here.

Not so on your first point. THe 80 will do direct DSD to analog, or stream DSD over HDMI, just like the 83.

What is does NOT have, is the better DACs for analog output on the stereo outs like the 83. The stereo outs on the 80 share the same DAC as the multichannel output.

Sorry, but this is what the user manual (link above) says on page 52:
Quote:
3. SACD Output: To select audio output format for SACD. The options are:
  • PCM - SACD Direct Stream Digital (DSD) data is converted into multi-channel, high-resolution PCM data. The converted PCM is then output through HDMI or the internal DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) for the analog audio output ports. If you use a receiver that supports HDMI v1.1 to listen to SACD, or if you use the analog 7.1CH/5.1CH audio output from the player, please select this option. You may also want to select this option if you prefer the sound quality of the DSD-to-PCM conversion.
  • DSD - SACD DSD data is output over HDMI without any conversion. If you use a receiver that supports HDMI v1.2a with DSD over HDMI, you may select this option. Please note that when DSD is chosen, audio from SACD playback is only available through the HDMI output. There is no audio signal from the analog 7.1CH/5.1CH audio output terminals.

That seems to be also what the line
SACD output over Analog: | PCM | DSD/PCM |
in the comparison chart is about.

So it does. I misread your original post to say it converted to PCM of HDMI, and misread their site as well.

Apologies.

No problem. It is confusing anyway. The table also suggests that with the BDP-83, analog output is generated from DSD or PCM. Would it really depend on user settings instead of always being converted direct from DSD?

The 83 can do bass management for you, but only by converting to PCM first. So you have to either not need it, or have some way of doing it at your processor in the analog domain if you want to use the 83's DSD to analog direct conversion.

Oppo being Oppo, though, they generously give you the choice.

I will probably be getting an 83, possibly the SE version, and using that in my second system.

My old Sony SCP-C555ES is flaky, and doesn't do DVD-A.
