Happy New Year, everybody.

Last week, we posted an article plus an update on the news page with essentially the following information: (numbers in text corrected; in graph not yet)
Quote:
New SACD releases up 8% in 2010

The year isn't entirely over yet but already we can conclude SACD has been doing rather well. After some years of gradual but consistent decline, the number of new titles released on SACD in 2010 has increased by 8% over 2009, bringing the number back to the same level as 2008; in fact even slightly higher.

According to authoritive site sa-cd.net, 634 new SACDs were issued throughout 2010, which equates to an average of over 52 per month. It seems that the number of classical releases has remained pretty constant while the number of pop/rock and jazz releases has gone up significantly, primarily thanks to Universal Japan's SHM-SACD roster. The term 'new titles' may be a little inappropriate here then, since most of those albums are reissues of classic back catalog material, which in many cases has even been issued on SACD already. Still, the future of SACD in 2011 is looking fairly bright.

A discussion about this on LinkedIn (in the Super Audio CD Professionals group which has recently become an open one) triggered this interesting response from Kal Rubinson:
Quote:
While I do not wish to be pessimistic, the observation that much of the increase is "primarily thanks to Universal Japan's SHM-SACD roster" is not encouraging. These are old recordings that may benefit, somewhat, from remastering and inscription onto SACD, and do not indicate progress. There is a segment of the audiophile population that continually repurchases the old music in new dress out of a hope to recapture the discovery excitement of their youth. It ain't progress and it ain't the basis for any real SACD success as a medium. In fact, it's boring.

Interesting, thanks. First intriguing thing to come out of linkedin in, well, ever, for me.
