Evidently, my 60GB is doing the flashing red light dance. We'll see if it's dead when I get home.

Oh well. I'll probably buy a slim before I pay the money to repair this one.

Aah, too bad. Do share how you're faring.

Hope you will stay in the club. SACD-compatible PS3s are still available.

Dead desu.

Now I have to figure out how to get my kid's game disc out of it.

Guess I get a slim for now. I'll probably add an oppo 93 to the mix later, so I can play DVD-A as well as SACD.

Not going down the used route, have enough issues with other equipment right now.

Don't worry, I'll still be hanging out here though. I figure I still own SACDs and a PS3, they just won't interact anymore.

Well, dug the game out of the dead unit.

Point of curiosity, I have the original 60GB HDD and it was removed prior to firmware 3.55. If this unit were repaired, then this old drive installed (since it is paired to this unit, it should work), would it be at the older firmware, or does upgrading also flash some onboard non-volatile storage?

I suspect the system software is entirely in flash and none of it is on HDD, so the HDD is likely not at all 'aware' of the system software version, if that's what you mean.

Probably. But the PS3 puts something on the HDD for system use, as the available capacity is never the full drive.

Well, finally replaced my SACD capability with an Oppo 103D.

My second Oppo deck (had an old 971 DVD/DVD-A unit). I've gotta say, I really like their stuff. The build quality, features and general all around style are very well done, up to the level of Sony and Apple.

Only thing I wish this thing did that it does not is list all the tracks from an SAC at once and let you choose from them. Performance is great, although I am streaming DSD to my Onkyo SC885.

It will also play back 2.0 and 5.1 DSD files from connected HDD and network sources as well. Really a great all around piece of equipment. For the same price as my launch PS3.

Welcome back to the club then?

So you got to replace two units by one -- the 60GB PS3 and the Oppo DVD-971 -- and yet have the capability to play SACD, DVD-Audio and BD? Great deal.

Still a PS3 in this stack or the gaming takes place elsewhere in the home?

No, I got a slim when the 60GB died. It started being flaky playing regular DVDs though, buzzing and humming a bit before recognizing the disk on about 4 different titles. Since having to buy a third PS3 would have really chapped my hide, I went ahead and got the Oppo. Now the PS3 is just used for gaming and Amazon prime duties.

Been replaying the original Ratchet and Clank series in HD in my winter holiday.
