I've read various reports of PS3 users who hooked up the console to their AV Receiver via HDMI which, before fiddling with the settings, indicated it was receiving (multichannel) DSD. When the receiver didn't produce any sound and they changed the settings it started delivering PCM which worked, of course, but there's no way to get it (back?) to DSD.

Can anyone confirm this experience?

Delighted to see the creation and existence of such a potentially brilliant site and forum. At last! Well done!

Yeah. I have not got any DSD out of HDMI from any PS3. I would like to see it though.

The PS3 should be capable of passing dsd natively over hdmi. I wish the engineers would add this option. I doubt it would be that hard to implement.

It might in fact not be able to do this, for the same reasons it does not do bitstreaming of some of the BD codecs. Its early 1.3 chipset was released prior to the fully compliant versions out now, and it is unclear if they have the capability.

Hope springs eternal though.

Bear in mind that DSD streaming is not an HDMI 1.3 feature: it was introduced already in version 1.2 of the spec.

Well, then, I am probably (and I hope to be) wrong. Also means that while the 40GB cannot decode DSD to PCM, they could add streaming of DSD to it in the future, no?

Probably it's the other way round: the 40GB unit has the processing power to do the decoding (it 'simply' runs on the Cell's SPEs) but lacks the critical piece of hardware in the optical drive's front end to recognize and read SACD discs.
