February 2008 will see the reissue of the biggest-selling album of all time, Michael Jackson's Thriller. It's already available for pre-order on Amazon here.

Again, however, like with the previous remaster (the 'Special Edition', probably the 20th Anniversary Edition), no multichannel SACD. No SACD at all, in fact.

It seems however Sony is not to blame in this case, but the artist himself is. According to this article from Fox News, the record company has sunk millions into making remixes of all his albums for SACD, without getting Jackson's approval for release.

Quote:
Jackson has spent not only millions on the making of Invincible, but millions more on the planned re-release of his catalogue by Sony this fall. All of his albums, from Off the Wall through HIStory, were remixed for the new Sony Super Audio CD format. But Jackson, working through an engineer, went through 50 different mixes of each song from each album. "He went through them and over and over again. It’s not like they hadn’t already been remastered for CD in the first place. And it was the same engineer who did it the first time. The guy just leaks money."

After this year's 20th Anniversary Edition reissue (by Universal) of U2's The Joshua Tree, which was originally reported to contain an SACD (see reports here and here) but in the end has four different new version (vinyl, CD, double CD, and 2CD+DVD) without any SACD, there goes another high-profile chance of bringing SACD to the attention of the masses.

The currently available Thriller SACD is considered the best available sound of the album in any format. It is only 2 channel though.

There's an interesting article about the 5.1-channel mixes of Thriller here:

For you completists, hardcore fans and other collectors, there are actually two versions of the Thriller SACD available: a Japanese one and an American one. (Note: SACD has no such thing as region codes -- they are universally playable on any SACD player worldwide)

(available from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de and other local branches)

The music page has been updated accordingly.
