If they had done so it would have given a different twist to the premise of this article

namely that the BD vs HD-DVD format war is different from all previous ones (including SACD vs DVD-Audio) in the sense that the battle is not just about the boxes for the main application (e.g. video) but also a carrier for two powerful games consoles.
Anyway, it's a little late now to add it, and it would be difficult to defend PR-wise, just after the downfall of HD-DVD. DVD-Audio isn't exactly a winning format. Less so for sure than SACD.
Also in the way of the 'conspiracy theory' (letting two disc formats fail in order to let downloads flourish) it wouldn't be too useful because this isn't something Microsoft needs to stimulate. |

Microsoft are being wayyyy too optmistic about movie downloads. THink about it - how many companies are actually incorporating this as a feature...compared to say pay monthly movie disk rentals, or compared to music downloads? I can't think of any apart from Microsoft on the Xbox. Not exactly a mass-market.
Add to this that the ISPs are asking the BBC to boost the ISPs' infrastructure because of the success of the VERY BLOCKY iPlayer, and what hope have ISP's of providing the systems that will allow even hundreds-of-thousands of HD movie downloads per week? Zilch for at least teh next 5 years.
In short, the X-Box will never be a movie machine, except for casual use, unless Microsoft add a Blu Ray player. Maybe the nexyt iteration will have one built-in. DOubt it though cos the present one is doing very well based on its recent price reducitons. So doubt that microsoft will change its strategy. They don't REALLY care about the 360 being a movie machine. It's an aside. |

My Apple TV sheds a tear at your callous indifference to its existence.
