Clearly in the portable music business the dominant player the rest of the industry focuses on is Apple, not Microsoft. So much even that when Sony abandoned ATRAC last year as the preferred codec for its range of Walkman devices it switched to WMA instead of AAC: to work with Microsoft as an ally to attack Apple. Sony offered tools to users of its Sony Connect music download service to convert their tracks from ATRAC to WMA.

At the same time however, while PS3 can play WMA, the only three codec options it offers for transferring CDs to the HDD are ATRAC, MP3 and AAC -- not WMA! The default codec is AAC.

It seems Sony's policy with respect to codecs is not quite coherent. Perhaps this is a case of their portable audio division versus Sony Computer Entertainment, but that leaves one to wonder what's to happen now the company is working to close its Connect music download service and revive it in some other way as part of the PlayStation Home online environment.

Does it need to be pointed out that WMA is a format wholly owned by Microsoft, whereas AAC, while influenced by Apple somewhat, is NOT theirs, nor subject to their control or licensing fees?
