According to this report by InStat (see http://www.twice.com/article/CA6549906.html), music downloads are to represent 40% of music sales by 2012.
For sure (and for obvious reasons), movie downloads will lag music downloads by a few years. Consequently, optical discs -- especially for HD movies -- will be with us for quite a few years to come.
Isn't it practical then that the PS3 is equipped for both options? |

Told ya.... the more downloadable films take the forefront in delivery of HD movies you are looking at 720P/DTS Core or Dolby 5.1. Dat's it.... Besides given the current state of the economy, people who are already up to their eyeballs in debt are not going to be lining up to buy high end high-fi equipment just to get HD sound and 1080P blu-ray films. The Gov't is already forcing people to switch out their TV's by February '09.
Bye Bye Blu-ray we hardly knew thee. _________________ KRZY |

Granted. These people are going to stick to DVD a little longer. They're not going to switch to any form of HD viewing in the near future, be it in the form of packaged media or downloads. |

A large percentage of the people up to their eyeballs in debt are exactly the kind of people who will go out and buy new HD stuff even though they can't afford it.
Spending on consumer electronics has not taken the expected hit as of September. The industry is waiting to see how black Friday goes to see if it's just a bit delayed, or if it will not be as bad as feared. |

I believe that's right. Moreover, I recall spending on entertainment in times of recession stays level or even rises. |

Some interesting data:
HDTV owners prefer discs to streaming 10-to-1
according to this recently completed survey. |
