I just bought a Sony BDP-S550 and despite the fact that it has 5.1 analog outputs to fit into my Yamaha RX-V361 for loss less Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, it has no SACD support. This is telling since SACD is a Sony player, you would think that they would support their own standard. The new Sony PS3s also do not support SACD. It appears that they are letting SACD twist in the wind and go the way of the Betamax. Sad This is NOT all that bad. From browsing Blu-Ray titles recently online, it is evident that most musicians are moving their music videos to Blu-Ray and DTS-HD or Dolby True HD. Since most people in the next couple of years will be changing out older DVD players to HD ones to go with their flat screen TV's this would seem to make sense. Anyone with an older A/V receiver and direct analog plugs in the back can take advantage of the lossless standard without buying new equipment. Unfortunately for those who have invested in SACD disks this is bad news. At least they can be played on the older PS3s if they have an newer HDMI A/V receiver. However the same holds true for those without SACD support in their PS3s, they can listen to music Blu-Rays with loss less sound via an HDMI A/V receiver. Smile

DVD is enough. It has support for 24 bit 96 khz audio, both 2 channel and multi channel. Enhanced for Widesreen TVs. Everything after that is the big electronics and media companies going way beyond the logical in search of bigger profits. SACD might have been a revelation but because of the DVD-A match up and Sony's obscure marketing techniques it failed. Not to mention the fact that most people can't tell the difference. Long live the DVD.

Nope, sorry -- unless you're talking about DVD-Audio, but that unfortunately has made inroads even less than SACD -- DVD-Video can do 24-bit 96-kHz and multichannel, but not at the same time. 24/96 (PCM) is stereo only, multichannel is Dolby Digital or DTS only.

If only the media companies had gone this way! That would have been the proper thing to do. Instead the've gone the opposite direction and turned to compressed music downloads (in search of bigger profits, obviously).
