There's a big interview (in Japanese) with Kaz Hirai on http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20071108/rt046.htm

He seems to suggest the SACD-compatible models and new (40GB) will continue to be sold side by side.

It also seems, by the way, that SACD playback cannot be added afterwards because of the apparent removal of some hardware.

Thanks for posting that. Interestingly it seems the new (SACD-less) model, let's say the 3rd generation PS3, already uses the 65nm process version of the Cell processor (though still the 90nm version of the RSX graphics processor) and as a consequence is some 6dB more silent.

The editors of Daily Tech seem to make a different translation:

"Hirai also revealed that the attributes of the 40GB SKU will soon apply to the entire line family of PlayStation 3 consoles, as the 20GB and 60GB models – the ones with full backwards compatibility –- are no longer in production for any market in the world."

Presumably the same counts for SACD compatibility.

The 80gb also has SACD Playback and it's not being discontinued at this time. So the op is correct.

The model numbers of the PS3 are confusing. It is difficult to
state what PS3 you have only giving the size (ex. 40gb) of the
harddrive. given that you can swap out the harddrive for
different sizes, it would be easier if people just give out the
model number of their PS3. If doing that is difficult, I have
created a webpage detailing how Sony arrives at their
model number of the PS3.

The whole model number detail is at:

http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html

Also on that page is stuff that I have experimented with
and provide detailed info for getting the PS3 to perform at
its peak potential. For example, getting all the next generation
gaming, audio, video, as well as backward compatibility working.
It's at the same webpage above.

Here are some of the audio stuff that are touched upon:
HDCD, DVD-Audio, SA-CD, DTS 5.1 music disc (or DTS CD), and "red book" CDs. Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, LPCM, and bitstream.

I also get into PS2, PSone, dvd, and blu-ray game and movie compatiblity
info based on region and country of your PS3 (including NTSC and PAL).

I don't think it is complete unless lots of people go over it and
comment on any details left out or any errors found. I am hoping
it is the end-all to any PS3 problem-solving page for audio (and maybe
video). Please do comment with a followup, or provide feedback
on the site. Thanks.

They had better maintain SACD playback ability. Mine is replacing my low mileage but failing Sony SCP 555 ES deck in my main system, and when the PS3 croaks down the road, I will want its replacement to have it too.
