one of the advantages of this new model will be a quieter mechanism;

The slim PS3 is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which retains the speed of the old 60nm. Improved power efficiency will make for a quieter system with less fan noise, according to Sony.

It would have been a true surprise to see SACD playback reintroduced in a new cost-down model.

According to FCC documents, Sony is planning a 250 GB model along the lines of PS3 Slim (judging at least by the type number CECH-2001B).

See http://www.qj.net/FCC-documents-point-to-250GB-PS3-Slim-from-Sony/pg/49/aid/133967

While it's not likely to reintroduce any of the features lost earlier I'm curious about the specs as this is in any way some sort of high-end model.

John Koller of SCEA has confirmed that and explained why PS2 compatiblity is not coming back. Considering they don't even mention SACD compatibility to me it seems even less likely that would come back.

We haven't got our hands on a PS3 Slim yet but did just get confirmed by Sony that the Slim will play DSD Discs, however despite the new HDMI chip will not bitstream DSD, only output it in (high-resolution) PCM format.

We'll make sure to add it to the front page as soon as our web editing software is operational again.

What is the difference between a DSD CD and a SACD. I thought they were the samething.

Wait. Now you're talking about DSD CD. I was talking about DSD Disc format. That and SACD are three different things.

SACD: http://ps3sacd.com/sacdfaq.html#_Toc168933192

DSD Disc: http://ps3sacd.com/faq.html#_Toc177216816

DSD-CD: http://ps3sacd.com/faq.html#_Toc177216816a

All PS3 models play DSD Disc and DSD CD. Only the first two generations play SACD.
