|
|
Hi
I am considering getting the Onkyo 705 amp so that I can hear the SACD from my PS3, as well as the new HD sound formats on some blu ray discs. Is this a good purchase?
I notice that the compatible amp list on this web site shows the Onkyo 805 but not the 705. Does the 705 lack something.? I have checked the Onkyo web site and see no reason why I would regret buying the 705 over the 805.
Thanks for your help. |

The TX-SR705 reportedly lacks DSD input via HDMI. Having said that, it is questionable whether PS3 will ever provide DSD output from SACD instead of 5.1-channel PCM so probably you'll be fine with the 705.
It's now included in the first one of the two receiver lists in the FAQ, along with the SR605. |

Thanks for the response. Looking at the online manuals, the 605 does not mention bitstream DSD support, but the 705 does mention bitstream DSD support.
You say the 705 reportedly lacks DSD support. Is anyone able to confirm or deny this. |

Not meaning to hijack this thread.
Is the 605 able to read the PCM converted DSD from the PS3? I believe I've read that the PS3 will send 88.1kHz/24bit via HDMI.
At the moment I don't care wether the PS3 or receiver does the decoding. |

It does. It appears the functionality of the Onkyo line is pretty similar all the way up the line. They seem to add a few things at higher price points (DSD decoding).
So yes, the 605 would have to accept mch PCM over HDMI, it's part of the 1.3 spec. So it would work very well with the PS3.

I believe that the PS3 send 176kHz. |

It depends on the receiver's capabilities. PS3 will send 176.4, 88.2 or 44.1 kHz, whichever is the highest sampling frequency it supports. |

I think the 605 can receive 192kHz max. Not sure about the intermediate frequencies. I'm gonna check on that. |

Please can someone confirm the exact measurements of the Onkyo 705 (or 605 which I believe is identical in size). In particular, I need to check the depth fits with the cabinet I have. The online manual lists that it is 377mm deep, but does not clarify whether this includes the depth of the volumne knob etc. If someone can confirm the depth of the top of the shell (i.e. ignorning the sticky out connectors on the back and knobs on the front) that would be appreciated. |

Well, their dimensions listed for my Onkyo pre pro seem to include volume knob depth and the protruding connectors on the back (but not cables obviously). So can't confirm on the receivers, but seems like they'd list measurements consistently.
