Half of PS3 users unaware of Blu-ray feature

Survey suggests the majority of gamers who purchase the PS3 are only interested in using it for gaming.

Many features, including Blu-ray, are ignored by gamers

SONY IS HOPING the PlayStation 3 will get more customers on its side in the HD DVD/Blu-ray format war, but while the PS3 has helped to increase the installed base of Blu-ray players, only 40 percent of PS3 owners surveyed knew that the system even had Blu-ray built-in. Furthermore, only half of those people had played a Blu-ray movie in the last ten times they turned on their PS3s.

It's apparent from the study's results that one thing interests the majority of consumers: games. The dueling next-generation HD disc formats, the ability to download content, and even high-definition graphics don't seem to matter to the majority of the game-buying public; if these figures are reflective of the wider market, all those features are being roundly ignored by most gamers.

When you take another look at the three next-generation systems through this filter, it becomes obvious why the Wii is in such a dominant position. It's the least expensive system, and all the added features that make the extra cost of the 360 and PS3 good values to the plugged-in aren't swaying the mainstream buying public. With constantly shifting hardware configurations, falling prices, and the HD DVD/Blu-ray fight still going strong, Microsoft and Sony may be sending the message that they're too complicated for the average gamer, while Nintendo's game-first attitude and strikingly lower price point may be exactly what the majority of console buyers want.

Surely awareness of the SACD format and the fact that PS3 supports it is even lower, despite it having been around much longer.

Then again, the aim of this site is to help improve that.

PS: the report this article apparently refers to can be found here but neither the teaser page nor the press release mention the BD awareness.

I would wager awareness of SACD is at something like 5% of even blu-ray awareness (and falling as BD gains momentum).

Friends I have explained SACD to don't even remember it a few months later. Of course I have very few meatspace friends with any real interest in hi-fidelity audio.

With any luck, the PS3's SACD playback (well some models anyway) will help a bit.

I doubt it is even 5%. It seems like people just do not understand the technology they buy.
